Brooks County and Echols County were the sites of the first Emory PA - SOWEGA AHEC Farmworker Health Project in May 1996.   Approximately 150 farmworkers and family members were seen during the first one-week project. The following year, the Project saw approximately 316 patients over a one-week period in June. In 1998, 8 students and 6 PA and MD faculty saw 336 workers over one week in June. This number increased to 448 patient encounters in June 1999 (with 12 students and 5 faculty participating). A variety of clinical diagnoses were made in the fields, camps and packing sheds.

In June 2000, approximately 494 farmworkers and family members were seen during the five days of clinics. Diagnoses made are displayed here

Data collected in 2001-2003 continued trends previously noted; the 2003 data is posted, with some reference to previous years. The 2003 Project was the biggest Project to date, with 509 farmworkers and family members receiving free care over the week.

Brooks County is a rural agricultural county on the Georgia - Florida state line. In 1997, over $59 million of agricultural products were sold (73% of this amount from crop sales). Farm size averaged 440 acres, with 430  farms recorded.

Echols County is Georgia's only rural frontier county, also along the Georgia - Florida state line. In 1997, 67 farms (averaging 267 acres) produced a total market value of over $5 million in agricultural products. Crops sales accounted for 94% of this.
